Hello everyone,

Here's a great reading suggestion about what might be coming in the future for European citizens, written by Ginevra Santini and published in the Digital Skills and Jobs  official EU portal

https://digital-skills-jobs.europa.eu/en/latest/news/emerging-technologies-and-future-work-europe

Emerging technologies such as AI, IoT, blockchain, big data, robotics, and AR/VR are already reshaping Europe’s job market. They create growth opportunities across sectors like healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and renewable energy, improving efficiency, quality, and accessibility.

While these technologies don’t directly cause unemployment, they significantly change job roles, making upskilling and reskilling urgent. Advanced digital skills are becoming essential, with an estimated 15% of EU jobs in high-tech sectors by 2035.

However, Europe faces a major digital skills gap:

  • Only 28% of people have above-basic digital skills.

  • There are just 9.8 million ICT specialists across the EU.

  • Over 60% of companies struggle to recruit ICT talent.

The shortage affects both ICT and non-ICT roles (e.g., doctors using advanced digital tools or specialists driving green transition technologies). 70% of EU companies cite a lack of digital skills as a barrier to investment.

The EU’s Digital Europe Programme (DEP) has invested over €294 million in digital training, covering AI, data science, cloud computing, and cybersecurity, while also attracting young ICT talent and supporting EdTech initiatives.

Key takeaway: The future of work in Europe is digital. Large-scale investment in digital skills is crucial to boost competitiveness, close the skills gap, and ensure no one is left behind in the digital transformation.
